Profound knowledge

"Profound knowledge" is an expression that was used by Dr Edwards Deming to refer to a specific system of knowledge that he deemed a prerequisite to realise truly effective organisations (Deming, 1994).

Deming identified the following four interrelated parts constituting this profound knowledge:

  • Appreciation for a system
  • Knowledge about variation
  • Theory of knowledge
  • Psychology
